Most of the side quests in Hogwarts Legacy aim to help various NPCs in the game by solving their problems, although some of these NPCs will ask you to help them cause new problems. This is the case of The quest called Venomous Vengeance where Ackley Barnes asks you to break into his former partner's cellar and steal some rare herbalist supplies.
You can complete the quest without breaking the law, but it's more beneficial + to steal the supplies as requested since it's easier and takes less time. The choice of the means to do this quest is therefore a question of ethics rather than skills. In any case, your choice will have no impact on the rest of your adventure in the game.

Beginning of the Venomous Vengeance quest in Hogwarts Legacy
This side quest becomes accessible after completing Mr. Moon's main mission and learning the Alohomora spell. You can trigger it by talking with Ackley Barnes, a sleazy-looking gentleman who hangs out behind the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade. You will then have the choice between two dialogues, but whether or not you feel comfortable stealing Alfred Lawley does not change anything.
Alternative for not stealing supplies from Alfred Lawley
Simply give Ackley Barnes a Venomous Tentacle to end the quest. If you don't want to "steal" from Alfred Lawley, you can get a Poisonous Tentacle in the rules. For example, you can grow one in the Room of Requirement or buy one from the nearby Dogweed and Deathcap store. Even better, if you already have one in your inventory, you can give one to Ackley.
However, it is much easier and more beneficial to break into the cellar, as you will find other herbology supplies there that you can use later. Choosing this option requires you to follow the quest marker to the cellar door and then press the button to enter. Then you have to use the disillusion spell to not be seen by Alfred, then you still have to follow the quest marker to an area where you will have to defeat a group of spiders. And only then can you take some herbalism supplies, before returning to the quest giver.
Reward for completing the quest
You can give Ackley one of your own Poisonous Tentacles or one from Alfred Lawley's Cellar, while having the option to ask him for a reward in both cases. Choosing the answer “I would like to be paid” will give you 500 galleons instead of 300, a significant difference. Also, as you will get for completing this quest 180 XP and Dragon Hide Herbalist Gloves: a special cosmetic item that is used to change the appearance of your equipment.
