History of Glaicad l'Eau-fondue
The Flèche-Nuage Mountains are covered by huge glaciers and snowfields. When temperatures rise in spring and summer, they partially melt and water flows into otherwise dry river beds. Trickling down year after year, carving furrows in the rock and soil, these glacial streams provide clean, fresh water for people and animals, creating unique seasonal ecologies. When herdsmen and lumberjacks criss-crossing the slopes near the Bois de Brume stop to drink from the crystalline stream, they often thank the fairy lord Glaicad l'Eau-fondue, Prince of the Thaw.
Every spring, Glaicad travels across the snow-covered ice floe with the lightness of a feather, leaving no trace as he taps it with his stick. When he does, melted water drips from beneath the glacier somewhere along the slope. Each tap is tiny, but together, countless melts create small streams that join together in ever more impetuous streams. His bare arms are adorned with luminous tattoos that, according to folklore, correspond to the streams of meltwater he generates. The marks change over time to correspond to the streams that widen, meander, confluence, shrink and reshape the earth.
Glaicad is rarely seen, but he sometimes appears before lost and frozen mountaineers. His mercy is harsh, for he warms the icy limbs of the unfortunate souls he finds, as befits his title of Prince of Thaw, but the comfort is modest because he only raises the temperature a few degrees above zero. The warmest water, or flesh, he tolerates is always bitterly cold to most people.
The Prince of Thaw wears a mask of gnarled wood, appropriate to his reserve, but it wasn't always so. He left the stability of his mountain to join the Sylvans and their allies fighting to destroy the corrupted Heart Tree and stop the monstrous beasts, gestating in unhealthy pods growing on its rotting branches, that served in its marauding army. Among these servants were half-cat, half-insect hybrids spraying flammable, caustic chemicals. Glaicad, trapped by an intense firestorm created by these creatures during a battle, used all his power to summon and redirect glacial meltwater. He combined dozens of small streams into an all-powerful torrent that raged violently against the counter-attacks and blanketed the burning forest, extinguishing the inferno. His efforts changed the course of the battle, but Glaicad's face was horribly burned by the flames and irreparably damaged. He has worn his mask ever since.
After experiencing this horror, Glaicad felt weak and considered abandoning his role. But he was encouraged and comforted by the Arbiter herself, who offered instead to house his weary body in a Shard. It would protect his power as Prince of Thaw and, in exchange, Glaicad vowed to use that power in his service against the forces of Darkness. She, and later her servants, released Glaicad each spring to visit his beloved glaciers and give birth to his beloved streams.
Accepting the Arbiter's protection, however, altered Glaicad's reputation in the world of Fairy Beast politics, making a complex web of relationships even more tangled. Her chief adversary had always been the Duchess of Running Water, who sought to usurp her dominion over the meltwater streams she considered her domain. But the power of mortal beliefs and legends about her, her ever-powerful magic and the grace of the Arbiter ensured the security of her lordship. Had he stayed too long in his Shard and neglected his status, the Duchess might have succeeded. She called Glaicad cowardly and pusillanimous for placing himself under the protection of the Arbiter.
Glaicad also keeps a close eye on the Fairy Being known as Eostrid Chant-rêve, who represents the spring cycle and its warm, fertile nature. The uniqueness of Glaicad's domain allows her to distinguish herself sufficiently from Eostrid, as does Eostrid's lack of interest in accumulating power among Fairy Beings. She's happy to roam, and Glaicad is just as happy to greet her cordially. He believes that if she took the big game more seriously, she'd seek to make him her vassal by declaring that melting ice and snow is a subset of spring.
Criodan the Blue was once a frequent visitor to the ice-blue hearts of Glaicad's glaciers. The Prince of Thaw considered him a friend, until Criodan's enemies began attacking the glaciers where the Blue hid. To better resist the supernatural flames of his attackers, Criodan strengthened the glaciers with icy magic. Glaicad, furious that another Fairy Being was melting his ice, but equally annoyed by Criodan's presumptuous alteration, banished both sides involved in the conflict from his kingdom. It's not for nothing that Fairy Beings are known for their capricious pride.
