Story of Greggor Lord de lune

During the Second Great War, the Arbiter needed a general to command the Nomads of the Krokhan Desert, a people composed of countless warring factions. For generations, Nomad clans had bristled at the notion of centralized authority. There was only one man whom the Arbiter believed could persuade this people to put aside centuries of rivalry and strife: Greggor, "Great Claw" of the Sand Bear Clan.

A man of bear-like strength, stentorian voice, debonair warmth and mischievous humor, he stood out in the eyes of the Arbiter for his sense of politics and consensus. Unusually for a nomadic chief, Greggor had offered many of his precious children as spouses and liaisons to other clans, to establish bonds of blood and loyalty. He had even led his clan's fighting force against the enemies of his allies, expecting nothing in return but their friendship. Many clans didn't trust him at first, but skeptics were silenced when all members of Greggor's coalition prospered thanks to the reduction in infighting.

The Arbiter visited Greggor carrying a Dwarf-made battle-axe from an ancient, personal metal, crafted with a degree of excellence never seen among the inhabitants of surfaces populated by celestial enigmas. She offered him the weapon to seal an agreement: if Greggor could unite his people as a cohesive fighting force, she would give him an artifact similar to hers.

Greggor soon proved that he was loyal and invincible, even when the battle seemed totally unequal. When the invasions of Demonic Rejects began across the desert, he rode at breakneck speed from battle to battle, helping Nomads of all origins to repel the invaders. When he reversed the trend and triumphed, he offered the surviving warriors the chance to follow him into even greater glory, his axe gleaming in the desert sunlight as he brandished it toward the heavens. Few could resist the offer in these troubled times. During the Battle of Bloody Ridge, he protected an entire camp of wounded soldiers who had taken refuge in a sandy valley. He held the crest of a dune against wave after wave of Demonic Rejects, defending the precious rise and permeating the sands with putrid ichor, with witnesses claiming he fought with all the fury of a sand bear protecting her cubs. Had it not been for his prowess, the invaders would have swept through the valley, caught in an unstoppable downward momentum, and slaughtered the cripples. After that, his subordinates gave him the nickname Lord of the Dune, and his fame took off.

The world will never know if Greggor could have consolidated his power and made his wartime status permanent, for even before the end of the Second Great War, powers of all sizes were conspiring against him. His former rivals said Greggor was a demagogue and tyrant, a threat to the freedoms cherished by the Nomads. Foreign rulers feared the possibility of powerful, expansionist Nomad hordes uniting, and sent their agents to slander Greggor and sabotage his activities.

Some were influenced by their peers or by external pressure, others had never intended to continue supporting Greggor once the immediate danger had passed. By the end of the Second Great War, he was no longer the Dune Lord, his power blown like sand by the wind, and it seemed that his dream of instilling a lasting political consciousness in other Nomads had failed. What's more, almost every warrior in his clan had been killed or displaced by the conflict. Many survivors had assimilated into other clans or left the Krokhan to try their luck elsewhere. He was tormented by doubt and regret, wondering if he could have protected his loved ones better if he hadn't accepted the Arbiter's offer. He cursed her and threw his Dwarf-made axe to the ground. When he looked up from where it had fallen, he saw the Arbiter.

Greggor told the Arbiter that he had nothing left to live for. Even as Greggor accused and condemned her, saying she was a schemer and manipulator incapable of true empathy with mortals, the Arbiter forgave and comforted him. She told him that the Nomads' independence tendencies were both a blessing and a curse. No single person, no matter how strong and charismatic, could force this change: it would have to come from the Nomads themselves, with the masses making this choice collectively. No union forged solely in fire and blood, in shared terror and trauma, could really last.

Greggor perceived the wisdom of his words, but remained desperate, a warrior without a cause. The Arbiter took out a Shard and explained how it worked, before offering Greggor the opportunity to fight forever against the Darkness. He accepted, wishing to rest eternally in the Shard to one day watch over his united people and his kingdom stretching from one end of Krokhan's scorching dunes to the other.
