History of Mathias Fléau-noir
When the Skinwalker Plague reached Arnoc, the Free City was destroyed. Citizens were slaughtered by the thousands as rats emerged from the sewers and hungry, slobbering beastmen attacked the city. Thousands succumbed to the ravages of disease, adding to the misery and butchery. One of the survivors was a child named Mathias. Stocky, tall and strong for his age, he was the pride of his father, a mercenary captain with a coarse sense of humor and a huge build. Before the plague, when he wasn't learning to fight, Mathias explored Arnoc, sometimes even beating and killing "sewer rats": a term he used for rodents, but also for the city's poorest children and beggars. It made his father proud.
All Mathias' malice and brutality came to nothing during the Plague. He was powerless when his progenitor was dismembered in front of him by Rat-Skin Walkers. With tears streaming down his face, he fled the city for the safety of Renaissance Land, home of the Sacred Order.
Revenge soon became Mathias' obsession. He demanded weapons, excelled in the Order's brutal training programs and intimidated his way into dominance over his fellow orphans. As the years passed, Mathias grew into an imposing brute, ruthless and relentless in his victories, and furious in the rare instances when he was defeated. He attracted dozens of comparses, all cruel and flabby, who became his closest followers. He considered them all pathetic, but they worshipped him and so he kept them.
When word spread that a purge crusade had been declared against the Skinwalkers, Mathias' roars of euphoria echoed throughout the Eternal Citadel. At last, his revenge was at hand.
During the Recapture of the Granite Bastion, Mathias was the first to storm the Orc-held ramparts. There, he slaughtered some twenty of the "creatures", giving other Order warriors time to climb the ladders set against the fortress walls. When he learned that hundreds of orc civilians were hiding inside the central dungeon, he threw the first torch into the fire, looking forward to purging the "vermin". At the Kyron Ravine Massacre, he led the charge against a column of Ogryn and Lizardmen refugees in disguise, and threw himself at them with savage, bloody abandon, cursing every last one of them. He spent an hour slaughtering wounded enemies, lying helpless on the blood-soaked ground, not stopping to rest or drink water. For another four years, Mathias slaughtered everything in his path around Kaerok, each kill an act of revenge for the massacre he had witnessed in Arnoc years before. Then, while fighting a monstrous bovine Skinwalker during the Langden City Uprising, the creature severed his sword arm at the elbow. He butchered the beast until it was a bloody mass of flesh in a fit of pain-fueled rage, and fought for another hour, receiving further wounds before retiring.
Mathias demanded that the Order's healers restore him to fighting condition. They cauterized his wounds with iron heated in the fires of burning Skinwalker corpses and sang praises to Lumaya over his stump, while treating him with holy water and crushed herbs from sacred gardens. At the same time, he ordered the blacksmiths to provide him with a weapon he could use instead of his blade. What they produced, and revealed barely a day after his wound was declared healed, brought an evil smile to his face. A black iron flail as big as a battle helmet, integrated into a dummy forearm. Mathias was eager to wield it in anger, and soon got the chance.
Crusaders searching for Skinwalkers discovered the Temple of Bones in the Free City of Narbuk, and slipped in with Mathias. He pulverized heretic after heretic with his flail and shield, scattering their brains and smashing their spines against the walls of the catacombs. He considered each kill a holy strike, sanctifying the city.
The "Black Scourge", as he came to be known, disappeared soon after Narbuk was purged. Stories spread that he had been killed in the night by weasel-like Skinwalkers too cowardly to face him man-to-man. But the truth is that the Arbiter saw Mathias and knew, because of his brutal and murderous nature, that he was the weapon she needed. Siroth's armies were full of repulsive monsters, and she knew that only having her own beasts would enable her to counter them. Mathias was only released from his Shard four times, alongside warriors such as the fanatical Errol and other Red Crusaders known for their savagery and bloodlust, on the most desperate and dangerous purge missions. At every opportunity, he mercilessly bloodied the forces of Darkness. The Arbiter hasn't failed to notice that with each new outing, Mathias seems to be even more unleashed. She fears that with just a handful more battles, he'll become impossible to control.
