History of Vizug the Toxic

The idea that the Ogryn constitute a grandiose empire or a disciplined army of simple soldiers is considered by many to be absurd. Yet on rare occasions of historical exigency, several Ogryn tribes have come together autonomously in hierarchical organizations. Held together by bonds based on threat and violence as much as oath or sense of duty, these powerful mega-tribes proved capable of changing history, but never survived the events that created them, burning out and collapsing in on themselves like a dying star. The Ogryn's enormous presence on the battlefield played an important role in the Gaellen Pact's vengeful campaigns. The Gaellan War saw the advent of some of the greatest Ogryn leaders the world has ever known: Vizug the Toxic, the Anhelt Looter, the Western Bone Collector, the Elf Crusher and the Human Killer.

Alongside his wife, Bruzor la Très Prodigieuse, Vizug ruled over an isolated branch of the Bone Crusher tribe. He was respected for his collection of ancestral tusks, which he wore at all times. He could name the Ogryn from whom they had been ripped after their death, and recount their valiant destructive prowess back to his most ancient ancestors, by running his fat, short finger over their various nicks and notches. His excellent memory made him a guardian of history, and wise men often called on him to judge disputes. He backed up his verdicts with powerful fists and a heavy cleaver: he had few qualms about cutting to pieces anyone who disobeyed or threatened him, before arranging his bloody bones around his tent. But Vizug left the violent business of looting and mercenary work to Bruzor, while he tended to his own defenses and tried his hand at alchemy.

When the Gaellen Pact issued a call for warriors, Vizug reacted with a shrug. But Bruzor, who had long been urging him to do something important with his life, encouraged him to take more initiative with verbal harangues and scathing blows. The Bone Crushers descended from their territory in the Cloud Arrow Mountains to the Lakes of Sorrow, mixing with Orcs, Skinwalkers, Lizardmen and Ogryn from the four corners of Teleria. Vizug had never been to Anhelt and knew of the deadly persecution of his fellow Orcs only by hearsay, and he quickly became enraged when he heard the tales of murder and torture on a massive scale propagated by the Red Crusaders. Thinking back to the valiant prowess of his tusk-bearing ancestors, Vizug internalized Bruzor's long-standing demands. When he learned that his cousins, the Bone Crushers of Anhelt, had been almost totally exterminated, that their bodies had been burned along with their tusks, and that his lineage was virtually the last of his people, he became thirsty for legitimate revenge.

As the Gaellen chiefs began endless preparations to sail in force towards Anhelt, Vizug consulted Venimages Lizardmen versed in the creation of toxic hunting compounds. He also learned from refugee Orcs and Skinwalkers about a siege weapon used in Anhelt, consisting of a combustible tar-like substance that was hurled over walls and into flammable structures. Using these sources, he devised a hybrid substance, for which he received the equivocal title of "Toxic". Those who witnessed Vizug's tests with this sticky, acidic, poisonous substance, impossible to extinguish even underwater when lit, declared, with a mixture of glee and fear, that burning alive in its grip would be one of the worst ways to die. When the Gaellen Pact's war fleet finally weighed anchor, Vizug gladly put this theory to the test. His "fire-vengeance", as he called it, led to the abominable loss of many Telerian League sailors and their ships. Once the Gaellens set foot in Anhelt, ranks of knights in shining armor, proud mages in immaculate robes and foot soldiers hiding behind huge shields were helpless after Vizug covered them with his compound, and their cries of agony added to the cacophony of battle. Wherever he fought, great plumes of oily black smoke rose above the battlefield, and a pungent stench of corrosive chemicals and burnt flesh could be smelled for miles around.

More and more Ogryn joined the banner of Vizug and Bruzor. Vizug proved to be a leader of majestic stature, far more so than he had previously shown when ruling over a small, isolated tribal offshoot. The wisdom of the ancestors whose tusks adorned his war gear guided him, and his impassioned speeches lingered in the ears and hearts of his followers. And, quite improbably, a united and enduring Ogryn form of government might well have emerged under the reign of Vizug and Bruzor, had the Gaellen prevailed. But their invasion was repulsed. When rumors of Sacred Order soldiers seizing a cache of fire-vengers reached Vizug, he was horrified. When he saw them use it on his own people during the retreat, he was devastated. He and Bruzor escaped the carnage and led many Ogryn survivors to the safety of the great Peltas wilderness, but Vizug's self-confidence was shattered by his and the Gaellen's failure, and their coalition collapsed like so many others before it.
